The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the New York Mets last night. The Bucs scored one run in the eighth inning and four in the ninth to take two of three games in the series. David Freese had the game-winning two-run single in the final inning. Reliever Felipe Vazquez earned the victory with two scoreless innings.
Pirates starter Ivan Nova allowed three runs on five hits over six innings and left the game trailing, but the bullpen kept the Mets off the board over the final three innings, allowing the comeback. Colin Moran, Corey Dickerson and Gregory Polanco had two hits each.
The Pirates have moved to the opposite coast and begin a three game series with the San Diego Padres Friday after a day off today. They will also visit the Los Angeles Dodgers before returning home a week from Friday.
The Pirates have placed Sean Rodriguez on the 10-day disabled list and promoted right-hander Tanner Anderson from Indianapolis. Anderson was a starter last year for Altoona, but has been a reliever for the Indians this season. He has a 2.34 ERA in 34-2/3rds innings this year. He has struck out 24 and walked six.
Jung Ho Kang was placed on the Class Triple-A seven-day disabled list due to a sprained wrist.
The Pirates are going to promote pitching prospect Mitch Keller from Double-A Altoona to Triple-A Indianapolis this week. The 22-year old right hander has a 2.72 ERA and 9-2 record for the Curve in 14 starts this season. MLB.com ranks Keller as the #13-prospect in baseball.
