The San Diego Padres shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 Wednesday afternoon. The Bucs went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position, leaving 10 on base. They managed five singles in the game with no extra-base hits.
Bubba Chandler took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned run on four hits while pitching into the sixth inning. The one run he was not charged with was the result of a Nick Gonzales throwing error, his 15th of the season.
The Pirates fell back to 7-1/2 games behind the Padres in the chase for a National League Wild Card spot. They are off today, and head to St. Louis for the weekend.
The Pirates have managed just one sweep since the end of May, taking three against the Milwaukee Brewers right before the All-Star break (July 11th-12th). Since that series, the Bucs have gone 15-24 overall and have been shutout seven times in that stretch.
The Bucs went 8-for-54 with runners in scoring position during the six games on the west coast.
The Pirates announced Wednesday that Endy Rodriguez will undergo hip surgery, which will take him out of baseball activities for 7-to-9 months.
