Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jared Jones was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for September. Jones started five games and went 3-0 during the month. He pitched 29 innings, allowing just three earned runs over the five games, while striking out 40. Hitters went just 13-for-98 against Jones in September.
The Major League Baseball Wild Card Playoffs began Tuesday.
In the National League:
–The Atlanta Braves defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3. Austin Riley hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game for the Braves. Game two of the best-of-three series will be played in Atlanta today at 2pm. The Braves are looking to snap a three-series losing streak to their National League East Division rivals.
–The San Diego Padres shutout the Chicago Cubs 8-0. Michael King allowed one hit over seven innings for the Padres, striking out eight. The Padres had 13 hits in the game, including three home runs. The Cubs managed a total of three hits. Game 2 tonight in San Diego begins at 10pm.
–The Chicago White Sox defeated the Houston Astros 6-3. The White Sox built a 5-2 lead through five innings. Game 2 in Houston is tonight at 5pm.
–The New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 9-0. Ben Rice hit two home runs to lead the Yanks. He drove in six of the runs. Boston managed just three hits in the game. Yankees starting pitcher Cam Schlitter pitched into the seventh inning, allowing two hits and striking out 10. Game two tonight in New York begins at 8pm.
