An effort to provide a more positive outcome after incarceration is officially underway in Butler County.
Following a gathering Wednesday afternoon at the Butler County Prison in collaboration with Butler County Sheriff Mike Slupe’s Office, the Prison has joined IGNITE which stands for Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education.
Warden Beau Sneddon says the program will be available to all inmates:
“We’re gonna try to customize a program that meets the needs of people that are here that are from our community and we have realistic expectations realistic goals,” said Sneddon. “We know not everybody is gonna go through the IGNITE program and never ever come back again but if we can impact their lives and their recidivism and keep them from coming back at least as often it’s a start. We consider that a victory.”
Locally, IGNITE will begin with getting tools like apps on tablets in place for inmates to complete prerequisite classes as well as arranging community partners willing to provide in-person training for small groups. Those who complete the program will receive certificates.
Attorney General Dave Sunday made a stop in Butler to mark the occasion:
“Through all of my career it brought me to this place where I have really embraced what I believe is a key to public safety, which is accountability and redemption,” Sunday said. “What better world can we live in than one where people after they’ve been held accountable for what they did are able to renter society to work to be part of the community to take care of their families to do amazing wonderful things.”
Butler is the 3rd site in Pennsylvania the 28th in the country to join this initiative of the National Sheriff’s Association.
