Officials with the Pennsylvania court system are warning about a new text message scam.
According to a news release, the courts were recently alerted about a scam that involves messages that spoof or mimic the court or judicial system website telling people that they must pay for an outstanding traffic ticket.
The text then details fictitious penalties that will be taken if payment is not made through a scam URL. Officials say the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts will never send text messages to anyone soliciting payment by electronic fund transfer, credit card, or gift card.
Anyone who receives a message like this should not provide payment or personal information. Instead, contact local or state police as well as the PA Office of Attorney General Bureau of Consumer Protection.
