The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 in 13-innings last night to open a three-game series in Chicago. The Cubs win snapped a Pirates four-game winning streak. The Pirates came back from a 3-0 deficit against Cubs starter Jake Arrieta, eventually chasing him in the seventh inning when they built a 6-3 lead. But relievers Neftali Feliz and Tony Watson each allowed home runs in the eighth and ninth innings as the Cubs forced the extra frames. Jeff Locke pitched three innings, before losing the game by allowing two runs in the bottom of the 13th. The Pirates had taken a 7-6 lead in the top of that inning. Gregory Polanco and Josh Bell hit home runs for the Pirates.
Rookie Steven Brault allowed two earned runs over four innings in his start for Gerrit Cole, who has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation. He was examined in Los Angeles Monday..
The Bucs and Cubs play again tonight at 8:05pm at Wrigley Field. Pre-game on WISR 680am is 7:40pm. Chad Kuhl will start for the Pirates. (3-1, 3.50 ERA). Kyle Hendricks will start for the Cubs. (12-7, 2.19 ERA).
