The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 last night in their three-game series opener at PNC Park. Jared Jones had a perfect game through five innings, and left after seven innings after allowing just one hit. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine. Relievers Luke Weaver and Gregory Soto completed the one-hitter. The Pirates pitchers struck out 14 Cardinals batters.
It’s the third time this season that Jones has taken a no-hit bid into the sixth inning or later. He has a 1.13 ERA in four September starts, and lowered his season ERA to 3.87 with one start remaining.
Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz scored the Pirates runs. Bryan Reynolds hit his 40th double of the season, which leads the National League and all of baseball.
Last night’s victory was the Pirates fifth in a row and was their 12th shutout of the year. They improved to 80-77 this season.
The two teams play again tonight at 6:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:15pm. Luke Bachar will start for the Bucs in another “reliever” game.
