This week’s civil case against former Butler County Commissioner Jim Eckstein has ended in a mistrial.
According to the Butler Eagle, after deliberating for less than three hours, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on all allegations of defamation made by former Commissioner Dale Pinkerton, county personnel director Lori Altman and her husband, state trooper Scott Altman.
However at the request of the plaintiff’s attorneys, the jury was polled and five of the twelve said that they did not agree with the verdict. They judge had previously instructed the jury that at least ten of the twelve needed to be in agreement in order to return a verdict.
A mistrial means that the trial could start all over again.
