The National League won just their second All-Star Game in 12 years last night in Atlanta. The final score was 7-6 after the N.L. won the first-ever “swing-off” to determine the winner. The American League scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at 6-6. Three batters from each team decided the game with a home run derby style finish. The N.L. won that 4-3, with Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber hit a home run on all three pitches he saw and was named the game’s MVP.
The National League had built a 6-0 lead through six innings, before the American League scored six unanswered runs to mount a comeback.
Pete Alonso of the New York Mets and Brent Rooker of the Athletics each hit three-run home runs in the game.
Paul Skenes of the Pirates opened the game for the National League, and struck out two of the three batters he faced in the first inning.
The Pirates return to play after the All-Star Break Friday night when they host the Chicago White Sox to begin a nine-game home stand.
