The Pittsburgh Pirates extended a qualifying offer to second baseman Brandon Lowe on Monday. The 32-year old Lowe remains a free agent for the first time in his career and has until November 17th to decide whether to accept the team’s one-year, $23.15 million offer. The Pirates were expected to issue Lowe a qualifying offer. If he declines it and signs elsewhere, the Pirates will receive draft pick compensation. In 2026, his lone season with the Pirates after eight years with the Tampa Bay Rays, Lowe led the Bucs with 35 homers and 96 RBIs, career-best. He was also a Gold Glove finalist.
Lowe was one of eight MLB players to receive qualifying offers from their teams. Included in that list is former Pirates closer David Bednar of the New York Yankees.
The Pirates also lost reliever Isaac Mattson off waivers to the Seattle Mariners. The 31-year old Erie native pitched in 85 games out of the Pirates bullpen from 2024-26. He struggled to a 5.35 ERA this past season.
