The Pittsburgh Pirates shutout the Houston Astros 3-0 last night at PNC Park. Pirates rookie starting pitcher Mike Burrows earned his first career victory. Burrows tossed 5-1/3rd innings of shutout baseball. He allowed five hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six. Three Pirate relievers closed the game, with David Bednar earning his seventh save of the season.
Another Pirate rookie, Braxton Ashcraft pitched two scoreless innings in relief. He allowed a hit and struck out three. Ashcraft has now thrown six scoreless innings since his debut, all in relief.
The Bucs had eight hits in the game, led by Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz with two hits each.
The two teams close their three-game series tonight at PNC Park. First pitch is 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15pm. Mitch Keller starts for the Pirates.
