A local lawmaker will reintroduce legislation he believes will protect the lives and reputations of those accused of crimes.
Representative Aaron Bernstine plans to bring back a bill prohibiting the commercial use of mugshots that passed the state House in 2021 with strong bipartisan support.
This legislation would prohibit the use of booking photos by websites that post them and require payment to remove them. It would amend Pennsylvania’s Crimes Code to create a new second-degree misdemeanor that prohibits publishing or disseminating booking photographs for commercial use with a penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of up to five thousand dollars.
More than 16 states including Ohio already have laws similar to what is proposed by this bill.
