A bill that would ban the use of cell phones in schools has passed through the State Senate unanimously.
The bipartisan bill would “require schools to adopt and implement a policy that prohibits the use of phones during the school day.” There will be exceptions made for medical conditions or individualized education plans in the ban.
The bill’s memo references a 2019 study that showed an increase of depression and anxiety rates between 2010 to 2019 for teens. The study credits cell phone use as the reason for the increase.
Seneca Valley School District implemented a similar policy this year; 27 other states have passed similar laws.
The bill now moves to the state house committees and a house vote before reaching Governor Josh Shapiro’s desk.
