A Cranberry Township business has applied to be included in President Donald Trump’s two-year exemption from hazardous air pollution limits.
American Contract Systems (ACS) in Zelienople has applied for the exemption after not reporting a violation in the last three years. In the last five years there have been no reported enforcement actions.
ACS is a Minnesota-based business that sterilizes medical equipment for hospitals. The Zelienople location has applied for the exemption is less than three miles away from Ehrman Crest Elementary School.
The toxins emitted from the facility had not been regulated by the EPA previously. In 2024 that President Joe Biden’s EPA announced they would regulate the spread of ethylene oxide, a toxic emission that increases cancer risk.
A decision has not been announced on if the facility will be granted the exemption.
