The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates and Paul Skenes by a final score of 7-2. Skenes allowed three runs, although just one was earned, over 5-1/3rd innings. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out 10, a season-tying high. His record fell to 6-5. His ERA is 2.89.
The Pirates bullpen allowed four runs, three earned, in relief of Skenes.
Bryan Reynolds led the Bucs with two hits, including his fifth home run of the season. But, the Pirates left eight men on base, and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
The Bucs and Cubs split their four-game series.
The Pirates open a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins beginning tonight. First pitch is 6:40pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15pm.
The Pirates are now 29-28 overall. They are now six games behind first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central Division. They are now two games out of the final Wild Card spot.
The Twins are 27-30 under former Pirates manager Derek Shelton. They are 5-1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the American League Central. They are one game out of a Wild Card position.
