Demolition has started on a long-vacant building on Main Street in Butler.
Crews arrived this morning to begin demolishing 123 South Main Street, which is at the intersection with East Birch Street.
The City of Butler acquired the property though the new land bank.
The city paid nearly $103,000 for the demolition of the building, which has been a longstanding building on Main Street according to historian Bill May.
“It was built in 1873-1874 by George Vogley Jr. The Vogley family had come from Germany to Pittsburgh. When he came to Butler it was originally built as a retail and manufacturing store. He sold tobacco in the front of the building and manufactured it in the back,” May said.
Main Street is open to traffic—only East Birch Street is closed at this time.
