The Pennsylvania Department of Health is taking action in order prevent the spread of the measles.
After a reported 84 measles cases in Pennsylvania the DOH has administrated over 1,300 vaccines. Are also providing information on vaccines and treatment. Many of the cases have been in the Lancaster-Lebanon county areas.
Measles is a highly contagious virus and can lead to fatalities quickly if not treated.
Vaccines have a 97 percent effective rate at preventing a person from ever contracting the disease. When the vaccine was introduced in the 1960’s, there was a 97 percent decrease in reported cases and deaths.
If contracted symptoms may not appear between 7 to 21 days and they will include difficult breathing, coughing, fever, and red watery eyes.
The most at risk to contract the disease are the unvaccinated and infants.
