Governor Josh Shapiro was in Pittsburgh yesterday to celebrate the early completion and opening of a major bridge project.
The Commercial Street Bridge, which carries I-376 into the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, was completed over a week early. The previous bridge was 75-years-old.
The massive engineering project saw an over 20-million-pound bridge moved into place after the previous bridge was destroyed.
Shapiro praised the efforts of PennDOT to get the project done early.
“This is how we do things in Pennsylvania, early and under budget. It wouldn’t be possible without the people who worked on this project,” Shapiro said.
The bridge fully reopened in both directions last night some time after 8 pm.
