After being swept by the St. Louis Cardinals in their four-game series last week, the Pittsburgh Pirates swept the Cincinnati Reds in their three-game series over the weekend at PNC Park. The Bucs won Sunday 1-0 with Oneil Cruz driving Konnor Griffin with the winning run in the eighth inning. Gregory Soto earned the victory in relief of starting pitcher Braxton Ashcraft, who pitched shutout baseball over 7-2/3rds innings. He allowed four hits and struck out six.
The Pirates had defeated the Reds 17-7 Saturday night and 9-1 Friday night. In the Saturday game, the Bucs tied an MLB record for consecutive walks in an inning, when they drew seven straight.
Carmen Mlodzinski allowed five earned runs in the game, but struck out a career-high 10 batters. Konnor Griffin led the Pirates 19-hit attack in the game with four hits.
In Friday’s game, catcher Henry Davis homered twice, and Mitch Keller earned his third victory of the season, allowing a run on three hits over seven innings.
The Pirates are off today, then open a six-game road trip in Arizona Tuesday.
The Bucs are 19-16 overall, and still tied with Milwaukee for last place in the National League Central Division, 3-1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs.
