A regional transportation plan will provide $4.7 billion in funding for a variety of projects.
The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission handles the distribution of federal funding and announced the latest Transportation Improvement Program, also known as TIP.
The program outlines the $4.7 billion in spending for the 10 counties in Southwestern PA, including Butler.
“There’s $1.67 billion of the funding that is formulaic. Every four years, the SPC comes together to approve a new TIP. All of the commissioners and other representatives get together to vote on how to allot the funding,” Rich Fitzgerald, executive director of the SPC said.
However, Fitzgerald said the federal allotment is not keeping up with costs.
“85 percent of the $1.67 billion is carryover projects. That leaves only 15 percent for new projects. But, new doesn’t mean a new road. It more deals with maintenance and improving roads that currently exist, like the Karns Crossing Bridge project,” Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald also noted that this TIP provides funding for the Route 228 project.
