As we hit the midway point of summer, local medical professionals say it’s important to remember to take care of your skin.
Sunny skies are responsible for high UV rays, and Meghan Ehko-Altman, a PA with Independence Health System, says sunscreen is extremely important.
“Wearing sunscreen is one of the best things you can do to protect yourself from the sun,” Ehko-Altman said. “Anything that is broad spectrum and over 30 SPF will work.”
Ehko-Altman says skin cancer cases are more prevalent than most people realize.
“There are over 5 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year in the United States,” Ehko-Altman said.
In addition to sunscreen, Ehko-Altman encourages wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and UV-protecting shirts.
