Butler County will soon be seeing increased infrastructure funds after a new federal designation.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development officially recognized Butler as an Urban County, meaning its population is now over 200,000.
That will give the county access to $1.4 million in Community Development Block Grant funding, which is about a half-million more than previously issued.
The money can be distributed to participating municipalities, although nine localities opted out of the program. It can also only be used in low-to-moderate income areas.=
The funding is primarily used for water and sewage, along with other infrastructure improvements.
“We cannot build housing with this funding,” the county’s CDBG coordinator Wendy Leslie said. “There is a false rumor that with the additional money, we will be building more low income housing. That is not the case.”
The money can be used for projects like owner-occupied housing rehabilitation and other home emergency needs.
